The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) is the voice of firefighters and the fire and rescue service in the UK.

The FBU represents over 85% of the uniformed staff of the UK fire and rescue service. Our members are frontline public service workers – covering the roles of firefighter to area manager, including emergency fire control staff and firefighters working in the retained duty system.

The FBU is the only recognised trade union negotiating nationally with fire and rescue service employers on behalf of firefighters and emergency fire control staff on the National Joint Council (NJC).

As well as representing its own members, the FBU also has a strong record of supporting activities that deliver wider public safety from fire, flood and other events that require urgent intervention. We have long supported campaigns for sprinklers in public buildings, safer cigarettes and safer technologies in the fire and rescue service.

The union campaigns for zero tolerance of fire deaths in the UK. We believe this can only be achieved through proper integrated risk management planning that combines the most effective mix of prevention, detection, protection and intervention measures.

The FBU offers a range of publications, including Firefighter magazine and other special reports, which are available on its website.
