The Institute of Fire Safety Managers (IFSM) is a professional body of highly respected individuals and companies who all share the same objective:

‘’To raise the awareness of fire safety at a local, national and international level, promoting fire prevention, fire protection and reducing the risk from fire as far as reasonable practicable’’

Members can benefit through the organisation of technical conferences and training events, communication with 100s of other like-minded fire professionals, updates on latest news, standards and technical advances, dissemination from other fire-related organisations worldwide and most of all remain at the forefront of the fire profession industry. At the present time, it has over 1600 members worldwide.

The IFSM have created the Tiered Fire Risk Assessors Register (TFRAR) as a way to help people locate suitable professionals in their area. The register is organised into tiers, which recognise the different levels of knowledge and competency that each individual currently holds. This ranges from entry level assessors just starting out in their career (Tier 1) through to nationally accredited, highly experienced professionals (Tier 3).

This enables the responsible person / duty holder to locate and select a Fire Risk Assessor who is competent at the prescribed level and is capable of carrying out a Fire Risk Assessment of the premises / workplace or similar establishment. The assessor will be able to identify and record fire risks, as well as carry out audits to verify another person’s Fire Risk Assessments.

The IFSM also encourages members who provide fire-related courses to apply for accreditation of their training courses. Once approved, your course or centre will be advertised on the IFSM’s website as meeting the standards of the Institute in terms of quality, content and methods of tuition. This can be applied for on the resources section of their website under ‘Training Courses’.

The IFSM welcomes entry at all levels and actively encourages and promotes knowledge advancement and membership progress.

Students in full time further education can also receive free membership during the duration of their study.
